World Internet Conference
The World Internet Conference (WIC) is an event initiated by China and held annually in Wuzhen, a water town in Zhejiang Province. It is a grand gathering of the internet world, with the goal of building a community with a shared future in cyberspace, and creating a platform to link China and the rest of the world - an interconnected world shared and governed by all so that different countries may reach consensus despite disputes and seek cooperation for win-win results. Government officials, heads of international organizations, IT titans, experts and scholars from around the globe are invited to the conference.
The first of the five WICs was held in November 2014. Every year, Chinese President Xi Jinping sends a letter or attends the conference. China holds that the development of the internet knows no national or sectoral boundaries. The sound use, development and governance of the internet thus call for respect of cyber sovereignty, closer international cooperation, and joint efforts to build a community with a shared future in cyberspace.
