Round-the-clock Radiation Environment Monitoring
A three-tiered radiation environment monitoring system is in place at national, provincial and municipal levels together with networks for national radiation environment monitoring, focused surveillance and monitoring of the radiation environment in the vicinity of key nuclear facilities, and nuclear and radiation emergency monitoring, providing round-the-clock radiation monitoring in all areas. As of June 2019, the national radiation environment monitoring network had 1,501 monitoring sites, including 167 automatic monitoring sites for atmospheric radiation, 328 land sites, 362 soil sites, 477 inland water sites, 48 seawater sites, 85 electromagnetic radiation sites and 34 marine life sites. There were also 46 focused radiation environment surveillance and monitoring mechanisms in the vicinity of key nuclear facilities, in addition to sites for monitoring radioactivity in food.
Data from radiation environment monitoring show that radiation levels in the environment across the country are within the acceptable range of natural environmental radiation, and that the activity concentration levels of artificial radionuclides are also within their normal range. Surveillance and monitoring data show that radiation in the environment around national nuclear facilities and nuclear technology utilization projects has not changed significantly compared with the levels of radiation prior to the construction of these facilities and projects, and the radiation dose for individual members of the public remains far below the national limit. No real threats to public health and environmental safety have been identified.
