The General Collection of the Dunhuang Caves: Archaeological Report of the Mogao Caves applied the most advanced surveying technologies to archaeological work to achieve significant breakthroughs in cave archaeological mapping. This archaeological report transcends traditional methods limited to text, drawings, and photography by integrating interdisciplinary approaches from archaeology, history, art history, Buddhism, surveying, computer science, photography, chemistry, physics, and information studies.
The report was acclaimed by the academic community both domestically and internationally and became a model for writing archaeological reports on other cave temple sites. école des Hautes études en Sciences Sociales awarded the 2nd Léon Vandermeersch Prize of Chinese Studies to Fan Jinshi, the chief editor of the series. The award not only recognizes the academic achievements of the Mogao Caves' archaeological report under Fan's leadership, but also signifies the international academic community's keen interest in and acknowledgment of the archaeological and world heritage preservation achievements at the Mogao Caves.
