Great virtue accommodates all things.
This term is from The Book of Changes. It means that a man of virtue should nurture virtue and accommodate all things and fellow human beings just like earth that is generous and peaceful. This reflects the ancient Chinese pursuit of moral cultivation and harmony between man, society and nature. It later became a philosophy and ideal on governance and human relations, and part of the fundamental character of the Chinese nation.
Speaking at the meeting marking the 40th anniversary of the launch of reform and opening up, held in December 2018, Xi Jinping said: Since ancient times, the broad-minded Chinese nation has pursued "universal harmony under heaven" and "coexistence of all nations in harmony," and confidently and generously maintained contacts and conducted cultural exchanges with other nations. China has old sayings such as "Just as heaven keeps moving forward vigorously, a man of virtue should strive continuously to strengthen himself" and "Just like earth, which is generous and peaceful, a man of virtue should have virtue and accommodate all things." It is this pursuit of improvement and openness that has made the Chinese civilization the only one in the world to develop in an unbroken line from ancient to modern times.
