Per capita GDP to reach the scale of a mid-level developed country
To realize basic socialist modernization was set, at the fifth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee in October 2020, as China's long-range goal by the year 2035. One of the specific objectives is to raise China's per capita GDP to that of a mid-level developed country.
Currently, there are no universally accepted metrics for the international community to identify developed countries. One method is to classify the economies with a per capita GDP reaching $40,000 as the most developed, those with a per capita GDP between $12,000 and $40,000 as developed, and those with an average per capita GDP as moderately developed. Based on this method and the economic norms for developed economies used by the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund, the threshold per capita GDP of moderately developed countries or economies can be set at around $20,000. China's per capita GDP in 2020 was about $10,504, and to make the figure on par with that of a mid-level developed country means that China has to at least double its per capita GDP to $20,000 by 2035.
