Westward spread of traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the best representations of China's traditional culture and advanced ancient science and technology. It is a treasure shared by all humanity.

The spread of TCM to the Korean Peninsula and Japan dates back to the 5th century. It was introduced to the Arabian world and further to Europe after the Tang Dynasty. During the Age of Discovery from the 15th century to the 17th century, better conditions were created for the exchanges between the Chinese and the Western medicines. After the 17th century, the missionaries coming to China began to systematically introducing Chinese medicine knowledge into Europe. The Polish Jesuit missionary Michel Boym (1612-1659) was the first to introduce to Europe China's Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor's Canon of Medicine), the earliest extant Chinese work on medicine, and pulse taking, a diagnostic method of the Chinese medical practitioners. He also made a comparative study of the Chinese and the Western medicines.

Today, TCM has gained greater global acceptance and recognition, reaching 196 countries and regions, and acupuncture is employed in medical treatment in 113 of the World Health Organization member states. Acupuncture, massage, and bone setting are the most popular forms of Chinese treatment in the West. The Chinese acupuncture has also inspired the Western nerve stimulation. In North America, therapists are increasingly using dry needling to relieve joint and muscle pain, and this has led to a wider spread of the Chinese medical skills.
