西学东渐的概念涵盖了16世纪晚期至20世纪初西方文明传入中国的一系列历史事件与历史过程。

明末清初,随着西方传教士来华,西学逐渐传入中国。传教士虽以传播天主教为目的,客观上也带来了一些西方的科学知识和文化,让中国少数士大夫开始了解西方的天文学、数学、地图学等知识。一些中国学者开始学习和研究西方科学,如徐光启与利玛窦合作翻译了《几何原本》等著作。

清朝末期,中国面临着严重的民族危机。中国的有识之士希望通过引进西方的先进技术和思想达到救亡图存的目的,这一时期的西学引进不仅包括科学与工程技术知识,也包括对西方政治制度、人文思想的介绍。这些新的知识与理念为后来的洋务运动、戊戌变法等近代一系列变革尝试积累了思想资源和技术基础。

Eastward spread of the Western learning and culture

This refers to the eastward introduction of the Western civilization to China and a number of historical events that took place from the late 16th century to the early 20th century.

In the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty, the Western learning was introduced to China with the arrival of a growing number of Western missionaries. Though their mission was to spread the Catholic faith, these missionaries also brought with them the Western science and technology and culture, and through them the Chinese scholars and officials got to know the Western astronomy, mathematics, and cartography and began to study the Western science and technology. One of these was Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), who worked together with Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) and translated Euclid's Elements and other books into Chinese.

China suffered a serious national crisis in the late Qing Dynasty. Insightful individuals hoped to save the country by introducing advanced Western technologies and ideas. The Western learning introduced to China at that time involved science and engineering, political systems, and humanism. These new ideas laid the theoretical and technical foundations for the Westernization Movement, the Hundred Days' Reform in 1898, and other reform attempts around the turn of the 20th century.

The spread of the Western learning had a significant impact on China's social transformation and modernization, promoting scientific and technological advances, triggering changes in people's mindset and perspectives, and providing references for China's political, economic, and cultural development. It also led to both conflict and integration between the Chinese and the Western cultures and enabled the Chinese to draw on the merits of the Western culture while preserving their own traditional culture.
