Monk Jianzhen's visit to Japan

Monk Jianzhen (688-763) of the Tang Dynasty was known for his six attempts over a span of 12 years to visit Japan to spread Buddhism.

Jianzhen was converted to Buddhism at the age of 14 and followed an eminent monk of the Lü sect. He was a high achiever with a firm faith in Buddhism. In 742, he was invited by the Japanese emissary monks to visit Japan and help consolidate Buddhist precepts and discipline. Their sincerity persuaded Jianzhen to make the journey across the sea.

But his first five sea voyage attempts all failed for various reasons. In the course of these attempts, he encountered fierce storms that nearly destroyed his ships and took his life, was met with obstructive officialdom, and suffered illness. But he never gave up, even after he lost his eyesight. He made the sixth attempt and finally succeeded. He was warmly received by the Japanese imperial family and the commoners.

In Japan, Jianzhen devoted himself to spreading Buddhist teachings and precepts, building temples, and cultivating young monks. This greatly influenced Japan's religious, cultural, and social development. The Buddhist sutras and precepts he brought helped institutionalize Japan's Buddhism. The Toshodaiji Temple built under his instruction became a model for the local Buddhist structures. The many books, works of calligraphy, and paintings he brought from China promoted Japanese cultural and artistic prosperity. Jianzhen also treated many Japanese people with his consummate medical skills and imparted medical knowledge to the Japanese.

Jianzhen's visit to Japan proved his firm conviction, selfless devotion, and unwavering commitment to Buddhism. His contributions are engraved in the history of cultural exchanges between China and Japan and remembered by later generations.
