Monk Xuanzang's westward journey in search of Buddhist scriptures
Xuanzang (602 or 600-664), a monk of the Tang Dynasty, was renowned for his epic journey to Tianzhu (India of today) in pursuit of Buddhist scriptures. Even in his youth, he displayed exceptional intelligence and a profound devotion to Buddhism. Disturbed by the glaring inconsistencies among various versions of Buddhist texts circulating in China at the time, he resolved to set out on a westward journey to seek out authentic sutras and authoritative interpretations.
With extraordinary perseverance, he braved extreme harshness of the environment, the threats of bandits, and countless other perils along the way. After several years of arduous travel, he finally reached his destination of Tianzhu. There, he visited many temples and studied under eminent sages to deepen his understanding of Buddhist classics and philosophy. His humility, erudition, and intellectual brilliance earned him widespread respect and admiration from local monks and devotees alike.
After several years in Tianzhu, Xuanzang returned to China carrying a large number of precious Buddhist sutras and sculptures. With imperial support, he and his disciples translated these sutras in order to pass on accurate Buddhist doctrines to the Chinese followers. This promoted the spread and development of Buddhism in China.
Xuanzang's westward journey not only brought back a large number of Buddhist classics and ideas, but also boosted the cultural exchanges between the two ancient civilizations of China and India. His experiences were recorded in Da Tang Xi Yu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions), which provides important references for the study of the histories and cultures in South and Central Asia.
Xuanzang's stories also spread far and wide in China. Based on his legend came the popular novel Xi You Ji (Journey to the West), one of the four great classics of Chinese literature. Xuanzang's devotion and works have inspired numerous people, and his journey represented a milestone in the history of China's cultural exchanges with the outside world.
